History of the Music Video

The first ever promotional film is stop motion animation, jump-cuts from daytime to night-time, and The Beatles playing and later pouring paint over an upright piano.


60's



  • The Supremes scored twelve number one hit singles between 1964 and 1969, beginning with "Where Did Our Love Go".
  • The Jimi Hendrix Experience release two successful albums during 1967 Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold as Love that innovate both guitar, trio and recording techniques.
  • The Bee Gee's release there international debut album 'Bee Gee's 1'st' in 1967
  • The Marvelettes scored Motown Record Corporation's first US #1 pop hit, "Please Mr. Postman" in 1961.


70's

TV first aired on the 1st of August 1981, the first video that was played is - Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles





  • Early 70's saw a rise in soft/rock, pop/rock 
  • ABBA were discovered after winning the Eurovison Song Contest
  • Indie development - Progressive rock, 
  • Virgin Media was founded by Richard Branson promoting alternative artists.






80's 
  •  Michael Jackson releases the album Bad, which is the first and only album to have 5 consecutive #1 hits
  •  John Lennon is murdered outside the Dakota Building in New York City
  • MTV First airs
90's 
  •  debut album (Weezer), Oasis (Definiately Maybe)
  • "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith becomes the first song by a rock band to debut at #1

00's
  • Death of Michael Jackson
  • Britney Spears sells 23 million copies of 'oops I did it again' and is therefore the best selling artist of the decade
  • Noel Gallagher, leaves Oasis after 18 years
